Do you think The Next Ten Minutes is entirely linear? I've always assumed that throughout The Next Ten Minutes, Jamie is still going forwards and Cathy is still going backwards, they're just meeting at a single point. So I take the intro of the song, which Jamie sings, and outro of the song, which Cathy sings, as taking place simultaneously, but I'm aware that that's just one interpretation and it's entirely possible that the entire song is one linearly-progressing moment. What do you think?

Hey john-loves-broadway!

I don’t believe the number is entirely linear. It’s the point where their stories intersect, sure, and the fact there is a moment of duet clearly illustrates that, but Jamie is still going forward, Cathy is still going backward. Are the intro and the outro taking place simultaneously? In theory, yes. But obviously they’re physically disconnected, which I think is a great transition back into the separate stories. I always wondered if it was some sort of comment on a emotional mismatch or disconnect in Jamie and Cathy’s relationship. There’s even slight shifts in instrumentation and variations in the score under Jamie’s intro and Cathy’s outro that indicate a shift back into their respective emotional states.

It’s one of my favourite songs in the show and one of my favourite musical theatre duets because I think it’s such a great achievement in terms of storytelling. It’s also a beautiful song. And SO FUN to perform.

Do I think I’m 100% right? Nope. Like you, this just my interpretation :)
